How we met Jesus and walk with Him.

Krystal Craven

I was raised in the church and I first accepted Jesus into my heart at the young age of 3, after hearing Psalty the Singing Songbook sing about being born again. As I grew, I learned all the stories about the God of the Bible, but hadn't been cultivating a relationship with Him. After my parents divorced as I entered my teenage years, I rebelled against the Christian norm only to end up facing heartache, trauma, and emptiness.

I met my husband my junior year in high school, we got married soon after graduating. By this point, we were professing Christ, going to church intermittently, but we weren't abiding and growing in Jesus. It wasn't until we were facing the upcoming birth of our first daughter in 2008 that something sparked in us that it was time to get right with God once and for all. As we got plugged into a home church and started reading and studying the Bible, God welcomed me back with open arms as His prodigal daughter.

In 2015, God called us to move and come alongside a church plant. The very next year, I found myself in an extreme health crisis, unable to walk or talk. Since then, I've been riding a roller coaster of my health waxing and waning, but God has been faithful and gracious through it all! In the times of feeling low, He always meets me where I'm at, reminding me that His grace is sufficient for me and that I can indeed do all things through Him.

Starting in my 20s through now, God has been using me through the gifts He's given in leading worship and writing the music He inspires. I don't know if I'll be healed from my disabilities, but I know that God is good and He's coming back soon, so I will serve the Lord with gladness, being faithful in what He's called me to until He comes! My heart and flesh will fail, but the LORD is my portion forever! Maranatha!

At the age of eight I began a five-year journey through two Christ centered Cal Farley’s campuses, where I learned of Jesus and His sacrifice and love. I also found my love and passion for music through choir, band, worship team, and church drama. My foundations in Christ, those small seeds planted would keep and carry me through the hard years to come.

I was born into a life of abandonment, many forms of abuse, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and what seemed to be a never-ending nightmare. My story is one of perseverance, rescue, and never losing sight of who I was despite the circumstances that I found myself living through. During my life, like so many of us the enemy worked overtime to keep me away from God’s calling upon my life. BUT GOD!!! Through Jesus, I found freedom not only spiritually, but physically! I was delivered from the life that held me captive, and my journey of healing would begin.

In 2015, the Lord once again watered the seeds of worship he planted within my life as a child. In early 2019 after years of fighting against His call, I stepped out in faith with the encouragement of those closest to me. Since then, the Lord has grown my understanding of the Word and the importance of worship. In January of 2020 I became the worship leader at Living Way Hemet, and on November 1st, 2020, I released my first original single Loving Arms.

Since then, the Lord continues to open doors, provide opportunities through serving and recording, that have helped me grow in my faith, walk, and love of worship, the Word, and Jesus. “It is in worship; God imparts himself to us.” CS Lewis. To me worship is the only place I felt comfortable communicating to the Lord, a true relationship and true trust and faith was new territory and a little scary. Worship is not a show, it’s a time where we don’t look to the left or the right, but we look up to Him as we make a joyful noise. That is the place where our hearts become an open line of communication as we prepare ourselves to hear from our Lord. What a powerful and mighty God we serve, He is faithful even when we are not, amen!

Jesus is both the writer of, and the ever-present character who weaves in and through our biographies.  When I was a little kid, I kept catching these glimpses of Jesus writing himself into the small and big events of my life.  What I heard in the Catholic tradition and Awana club told me that Jesus loved me; and in real life, Jesus proved that to be true.

My childhood family experienced turmoil when I was a teenager, and it was at this time when Holy Spirit cultivated within me a longing to know God not merely religiously and intellectually, but authentically and personally.  A community of believers who practiced close fellowship with Holy Spirit helped me learn the ways of that kind of connection with God.  I was driven to uncover the Bible, because in reading, it was like discovering that I had been adopted and that my rich inheritance as a child of God was waiting for me; it was like getting to know a Father who had always loved, guided, and waited for me.  I belonged, and I had a good Dad.  In Jesus, because of his death and resurrection, I receive release from shame and guilt, and know that I am accepted and forgiven.  I’m staying right here, Home in Jesus, forever.

Watching for and responding to how Jesus is shaping the narrative of our lives has led me into rich adventures, such as marriage with my husband Drew, eleven+ years sojourning in China, and raising our four kids including a daughter with cerebral palsy and deafness.  Now Jesus is drafting the newest chapter, as we rebuild home and wholeheartedness in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In my songwriting, I try to interpret my own stories (and sometimes other tales), which are authored by and reveal to us, Jesus.

I am fortunate to have been brought up by Christian parents, and I made a decision to follow Christ early on in life. Ever since, God has been faithful to grow my faith through trials. Wherever I’ve gone, He has always been faithful to provide, and as I attempt great things for God, he is always faithful to provide.

I’ve always enjoyed music! There’s just something great about the creative process of writing a song. There’s something special about performing with others. I don’t know if my music will ever get much attention, but I do hope it will encourage the people who listen!

It is so important for Christians to know the truth found in God’s word, the Bible. Things are changing all around us, but He never changes, and His word remains forever! “Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways” (Psalm 128:1).

Be still and know that I Am God. Ps.46:10

Hey there fellow searcher,
I was lost and now I’m found,
I was blind but now I see.
Jesus is the great I Am. He is my all in all - and in Him I am complete. I am a sinner that Jesus has set free.
Because the reality is Jesus died personally for me

[for everyone] and for all of our sins. And now we can know Him personally more & more & more each and every day. It’s what He did on the Cross that makes me love Him and cry out to Him.
How about you? It’s time to “cry out to the Lord Jesus!“
And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart, the
Lord says. Jer. 29:13
It’s when you are serious about seeking the Lord with all of yourself that you will find Him too.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."

Dear Friends,

I don’t expect you to fully understand my story, all I ask is you read it with an open mind and open heart. May God bless you and keep you.

I grew up in a chaotic house and lifestyle. I can recall my parents fighting a lot, doors slamming, yelling, and ultimately my parents separating. In my heart I knew my mom hated my dad drinking all the time and partying. I grew to hate it too. As a child I felt that my dad’s drinking was the cause of our family's demise. I swore to never be like him EVER. He now has cancer of the liver. In their separation I went through many ups and downs and trials. I always felt lost, scared, and unsure. There was no security of any. In the 7th grade my parents got back together and we began living together. My dad’s drinking began to get out of control again and my parents began to relive the insanity that separated our family in the first place.

Once I started junior high, I met my best friend Kevin. He got me addicted to skateboarding and instead of being home I escaped for hours skating until I was forced to be home. On many Wednesday nights Kevin’s parents would take us to Calvary Chapel Downey where I was first introduced to the Gospel. The following summer I went to Big Bear with my uncle. It was then with my cousin that I experienced the sensation of getting drunk and smoking weed. I failed to remember how I swore I’d never be like my dad. The first time getting drunk I got very sick for a week straight. I cried to God for help and swore I’d never do it again. Upon recovering, I immediately drank again. My power of choice was gone. All that was left was self-destruction.

For many years after that I began playing music in punk bands and living to please only myself. Before I was even 21 years old I had dragged myself and my loved ones through the mud and hell. Eventually I was introduced to rehab and recovery. And although that provided me a time away from the party, it didn’t provide me the power and direction that I needed to overcome. No matter how much I wished and tried to change myself, the worse I seemed to get! Then my life grew so dark and I remember the people at church talking about how Jesus saves. I also remember in recovery how those people would tell me to surrender to God, but still rejected the idea, I ran. I always felt like God was coming after me.

In the year 2007 in the last week of March, I found myself incarcerated and with nothing left to live for and it was then I realized that God was with me and that I needed Him. I didn’t realize that it took not having anything to realize that God was all I needed and have ever needed. I got on my knees and asked Jesus to come into my heart, be the Lord of my life, to remove my desire to drink, use drugs, and to be self-destructive. I told Him that I could not do life alone and I needed His help. Since that day all kinds of remarkable things have followed. The Holy Bible became more than just a book. It spoke to me! My desire to drink and use drugs has been lifted .

I have been delivered for 14 years now. My prejudice towards people vanished and everyone became children of God. The hate I had for my parents was removed. But most of all, my hate for the world and the people in it has changed into me loving God, His people, this world and the new life He’s given me. If you asked me if I think I deserve this new life, I’d say no way. I am saved by Grace and I pray I never get what I deserve. Life isn’t perfect but it’s better than its been ever, thanks be to God. Thank you for listening.

When my father accepted Jesus into his heart, this is when I was being shared the gospel and the bible was being read to me by him. Sunday school at our new church came alive because the focus was on Jesus and how He died for my sins. I was being taught by bible readers that were excited about what Jesus did for them and how I am to walk with Him. I could sense that they really wanted to lead us kids to Jesus, mostly because they prayed with us and gave us an opportunity to accept Him in our lives. To top it off we were allowed to jump down (fly off steps in the school’s music room), turn around, touch the ground, and praise the LORD! It was a wild dance party praising Jesus each Sunday and Wednesday. I saw Jesus as FUN and how much he loved me while reading through the bible and being around others who do. I spent a lot of time praying alone, making sure I was born again so I wouldn’t get left behind when Jesus calls me home. I made my public stand at the Summer Harvest as a tween and always knew God saved me and loved me throughout my life. When I would pray, I remember something very well, I’d always ask God to never let me succeed unless  my heart was fully committed to Him.

Today I see He is answering what I asked Him. He gives me what I need and takes away what He needs to for His purpose and for His glory and I am still open to be 100% ok with that. I know that I need to be constantly cleansed by His Word and without His death on the cross for me, I would not be ok in this world nor eternally. He came to die for me so I can have a relationship with God. He is my substitute because I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I couldn’t have asked for anything more precious in my life but the gift my parents gave me and continue to share with me sticking close to Jesus by their walk with Him. I hope to share some of that FUN with you by reading and singing through the Word of God.

Thank you LORD for being the ultimate sacrifice for me. You have my heart, thank you for everyone that you brought in my life to show me the Key. It is You. In Jesus name Amen.

In 1990 I accepted Christ into my heart. My brother before me gave his heart to Jesus earlier that year and spoke to me about God. At the closing of service there was a call for people to walk up to the stage a share their new found faith. I walked up to the front of the stage at Calvary Chapel West Covina later to become Calvary Chapel Golden Springs led by Pastor Raul Ries. With my new discovered faith I decided to share the Word of God through music. I began playing in various worship groups and ultimately joined a band that was part of growing Christian music scene that reached world wide. Through out my music career I struggled dividing my time with God and the music I was playing. Fast forward to present day I notice that many bands claiming to be Christian lack the sharing  of the Bible in their music. Thankfully there is a movement to get people (like me) into reading the scriptures again by inviting faith minded people to create a song in any form they want and express God’s word. I feel more than ever that the world needs to hear God’s word in these unprecedented times. This movement had planted a seed in me to get into God’s Word more than I have done before.

Leah and I were both raised in small towns in Central Kansas. We had church upbringings, but both stepped into passionate relationship with Jesus in our college years. We got to know each other leading a team of missionaries in Thailand, working to get women out of the sex industry there. It took me a few years after our summer overseas, but I finally got my head on straight and asked her if she'd be my gal. She said yes (Praise the lord!). We've been following the Holy Spirit, making music from the scriptures, and doing ministry in our home ever since. We've been in Kansas City for seven years now, have three little ones (twins Rufus and Ada who are 6, and Phineas who's 3), and live in a ministry house full of college art students. Every day our eyes are opened more and more to the great mercy, love, and power of the Lord!
